Case study 2:
A Central European country wanted to upgrade its government broadcasting network to reach the most isolated 20% of the population
Upgrading traditional microwave links would have been too expensive, so it was decided to use 52 low-cost satellite receiver terminals. The potential lack of flexibility of the system has been overcome using GSM phone links.
Big Blue 2 supplied the programming power to provide intelligence at the remote sites. This enables, for example, automatic switching of transmitters if the system identifies a problem.
The implications go beyond maintenance issues, however. The over-air command system gives central, on-screen control over all transmitters, allowing regional opt-out and other benefits.
The broadcasters saved money and have ended up with a more powerful, flexible system.
