Case study 1:
Six interactive visual journeys through the industrial history of Wales are part of an innovative computer CD-ROM series highlighting The Visual Culture of Wales.

Programming and multimedia specialists Camart worked with producer Dr Will Howard on the Industrial Society package, which features over 700 images, plus animation, video and film clips and sound effects.

"I designed the structure of the presentation, and Camart provided the programming expertise, using QuickTime, Director and a range of progamming techniques," says Dr Howard, who works in new media from his base in Bishops Castle, Shropshire.

"Although Camart are based in Cambridge, the internet allowed us to work closely on the project. They are very thoughtful about the best way to achieve the desired effects, and coming up with innovative solutions to programming challenges."

The end result has been praised in educational circles for its academic content, comprehensive subject coverage and useability. It is easy to navigate around the disk, and the multimedia effects bring the content to life. There are, for example, old photos merging into modern Quicktime movie clips, links to sound files and easily accessible references for further reading and investigation.

The Visual Culture of Wales was authored by Peter Lord, of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies and is published by the University of Wales Press.
